COLISH Releases and Phases

Overview of releases and tooling

By Service | 16 August, 2020

Introduction

Each version of COLISH is being released in a collection of steps. The development of teaching methods, of software, of changes to technical systems, etc., is dependent on a coordinated release planning.

The generic chart on this page is an overview of the COLISH releases and phases.

Second line products such as software, teaching books, etc., will undergo a similar release change process.

Note: The x-axis of the chart is time flowing from left to right. For the purpose of readability, the time periods are distorted: The left ‘Pre-Live’ block is approx. 3 years duration, the right ‘Live’ block might be 40 years duration.

Alpha Release

The Development Phase starts with an Alpha Release.

The Alpha Release contains the major version features.

Parallel to this release, talks will be going on between Stakeholders and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) to determine which features are to be included in the final release.

Field tests might be carried out to determine useability and the impact on users.

Beta Release

As soon as PLM has fixed the Feature Set, a Beta Release will be issued.

Third parties such as software developers, training organisations, interface developers, education specialists, authors, can now start to prepare themselves and plan tooling development.

Feedback from 3rd parties can flow back to the product development team and PLM.

Preview Release

As soon as the version Feature Set becomes stable, a Preview Version will be released.

This signals the start of the Tooling Phase and 3rd parties can now start tooling development.

Pre-Assurance Tests will be carried out in parallel to ensure the useability of the Feature Set by training organisations, teachers and beta (preview) users in the field.

Improvements and corrective changes will flow back into the Feature Set.

Release Candidate (RC)

With time and improving confidence, PLM will flag the version as a Release Candidate. Only small changes will now flow into the Feature Set.

Production Release

As soon as Stakeholders are ready, PLM will flag the version as ready for production. 3rd parties can now release their tools as ‘production ready’ so that Education Organisations can use them for training and teaching.

Formal Release

The ‘Formal Release’ of the version signals to the world that the COLISH version can now go ‘Live’.

The rollout in the market will be dependent on CoForum Stakeholders.
